SUSTAINABILITY

Ranching is part of the Pantanal tradition for over 200 years and is based on the harmonious coexistence with nature

Social Responsibility
The ranches associated with ABPO are in full compliance with Brazilian labor laws.  Every employee is registered and has access to adequate housing, nutrition, healthcare, and education.  Slave and child labor are prohibited.  The certifying body, the Institute of Biodynamico Certification (IBD), annually audits every ranch, guaranteeing their continued compliance with all standards.

Pantanero School:
A priority of the Association is to continually work to improve and achieve concrete social actions that go beyond the organic certification’s requirements.  ABPO strives to positively contribute to improving the livelihoods of the isolated populations in the Pantanal.
The goals are:
- To preserve the Pantanero Man and his family in the Pantanal;
- To maintain and promote the “Pantanero Culture”
-To guarantee access and improve the conditions of basic education for the Pantanal’s isolated populations.
- Offer specific courses and training that enable capacity building and recognize the value of the local laborer.
-Improve access to medical and dental attention for those living in isolated areas of the Pantanal.

Environmental responsibility
ABPO associates are Brazilian Pantanal ranchers from the state of Mato Grosso do Sul.  Descendents from families historically involved in the region’s development.  They are a group of rural producers concerned with the economic viability of their investments and maintaining an environmental and social balance in the region.  These distinctive producers have found an opportunity – in Organic Beef Certification – for traditional cattle ranching practices to benefit continued development in the Pantanal floodplains.

Non-governmental environmental organizations, such as WWF-Brazil, recognize that organic cattle ranching is a productive alternative that contributes to the environmental conservation of this paradise.  The organic certification screens and controls the cattle ranches according to the following basic criteria:
- Compliance with essential environmental legislation according to the Brazilian Forest Code.  Every ranch must possess both an intact Legal Reserve and an area of Permanent Preservation.
- Prohibits the use of agro toxins.
- Protects and conserves their hydrological resources.
The association ABPO, being committed to environmental preservation, seeks to achieve the following goals:
- To provide continuity to large-scale organic cattle ranching as an important initiative for the conserving the Pantanal.
- To constantly improve the production process by implementing new technologies and maintaining the environmental sustainability of the Pantanal.
- To develop and support projects that focus on environmental conservation.
Currently more than 90 thousand hectares are under environmentally sustainable production in the Pantanal.
