The Pantanal and the Pantanero

Ranching is part of the Pantanal tradition for over 200 years, always based on the harmonious coexistence with nature

Pantanal
The Pantanal is the world’s largest continental wetlands, with an area of 158,592 km2, it spreads across the Brazilian states of Mato Grossso and Mato Grosso do Sul extending into Bolivia and Paraguay.  This paradise shelters 122 mammalian species, 263 fish species, 93 reptile species, 656 bird species, and 1,647 plant species.  This unique and sensitive floodplain, with altitudes varying from 80 to 150 meters, is situated in the central part of the Pantanal River Basin and is rich in biodiversity.

“The largest wetlands on the planet, the Pantanal spreads across more than 148,000 Km2 of Brazil, an area larger than Portugal and Holland combined.  It is one of Brazil’s most important natural environments.”

“A ruler cannot measure the Pantanal, above all when it rains.
The Ruler is a measure of limits and the Pantanal is limitless.
Here, pretty is unnecessary, Beauty and Glory are in the eye of the beholder”
Manoel de Barros

The Pantanero
Cattle ranching was introduced in the Pantanal floodplains by the first colonizers more than 200 years ago. This activity, with the passing of the years, has influenced the region’s cultural traits.  The isolation and distinctive conditions of life in the region have molded the “Culture of the Pantanero Man”, which is defined by a harmonious coexistence with nature, particularly in the “fieldwork” with cattle, the language, and the local customs.
